The Celtic saints often referred to somewhere as a 'thin place'. This referred to when the Spiritual atmosphere of a location made it easy to connect with God, almost as though there was no barrier between heaven and earth. We might refer to such a place as a Spiritual portal, or an ancient well.  These places still exist and people hungry to encounter the living God will actively seek them out.  These places are often where Christians in previous centuries worshiped and prayed, creating a portal like at Bethel, where angels ascended and descended between heaven and earth.

The places God is calling us to are where ancient Celtic Christians, (sometimes referred to as the Celtic saints), lived and carried out their lives in the 5th-7th centuries AD. Many of them moved in the supernatural, exhibiting power over the natural and spiritual realms. Miracles of healing were experienced, as well as confrontations with evil supernatural forces which were overcome. They lived lives of adventure, service, and faith in extraordinary circumstances, often seeing similar miracles to those written about in the Bible. The names of some people remain, most don’t, but their prayers and faith continue to have an impact even today. At these sites, or ancient wells, it is often possible for individuals who are seeking, to encounter God for themselves in extraordinary ways. Angels have been seen guarding the deposits in the Spirit realm.

Some ancient wells are known and are still places of pilgrimage today, such as Iona in Scotland. There is a Spiritual legacy at these places which God is drawing many to rediscover, not in the sense of going backwards or dwelling in history but more in a rediscovering and marrying together with faith today. There are Spiritual things which we can learn from these saints as well as Spiritual deposits which we can also experience. Often in these secluded places, away from the busy modern lives we live, there is an opportunity to breathe and to stop long enough to encounter the extraordinary, the exciting, the unusual supernatural realms of God. This is something that God is restoring as ancient wells in the Spirit begin to reopen once more.

The exact origins of the term “thin places” may never be traced, but there is an ancient Celtic saying that beautifully introduces this terminology ...."Heaven and earth are only three feet apart, but in thin places that distance is even shorter."

Ancient Celts spoke of mesmerizing, mystical places where the veil between heaven and earth is very thin. Past, present and future seem to collide in these spaces.  It is as if the visitor witnesses or even experiences an ancient reality, in just a passing moment.
